Paul Sérusier and Brittany, Legends and Spells
Design and creation of audiovisual content for the exhibition of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan
From June 28 to September 30, 2018, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux - Grand Palais organized the exhibition “Paul Sérusier and Brittany, Legends and Spells” at the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana. Paul Gauguin’s call to “dare everything” was embraced by the Pont-Aven group, of which Paul Sérusier (1864-1927) was a part until 1891, and would challenge the traditional notions of subject, color, form and composition by considering the canvas as a flat surface.
Managed by the Rmn-GP, the exhibition, some 6,000 km away from the region of Brittany, offered Kazakhs the opportunity to discover Breton attire and legends. Comprised of about fifty pieces from French public and private collections, this exhibition was divided into five sections, offering an unprecedented and selective overview of Paul Sérusier’s Brittany-inspired artwork.
The Rmn-GP asked Reciproque to produce a film about the artist, featuring six 2-minute sequences projected in the center of the exhibition.
Each sequence is based on an iconic Paul Sérusier painting and presents an animated and poetic journey through the landscape and subjects that would color the painter’s everyday life: Breton landscapes, traditional dances, undergrowth, crashing waves, portraits of people wearing traditional garb.
